A Motherhood Film & Photo Session

with Simone North and her family

In early February, I had the absolute pleasure of spending an afternoon with Simone North, her partner Sheldon, and their two girls—Satiya, 2.5, and Symphony, 3 weeks old. Oh, and also their cat, Picnic.

Simone is a yoga instructor, focusing on yoga therapy, and a mental health & addictions counsellor. She is an advocate for self care and self love, and aims to raise her daughters in an environment that is accepting and empowering.

Simone and I have know each other for a few years now, and the last time I saw her was when we were both on mat leave with our first daughters. Both of us, brand new moms, overwhelmed, exhausted, and just trying to laugh our way through this wild experience that is new motherhood. Our daughters were about a month apart in age, so we found our experiences to be very relatable. It had been almost two years since I had seen Simone, and a lot has changed. She has a second, and very fresh baby girl, and I was so happy to see how much she has evolved as a Mother. After spending a few hours hanging out with her and her family in their home, I left the session feeling so refreshed by Simone's calmness and confidence in her new role as a mom of two.

My favourite part of the session was when I had finished shooting all of the footage, Sheldon went to put Satiya down for her afternoon nap, and I was able to sit down with Simone while she nursed Symphony, and interview her all about her personal Motherhood journey.

We covered so many topics in our discussion. All of the life lessons she's learned, the differences between her first and second child, the immense ways her life has changed, the struggles, the unconditional love for her family, her appreciation of Sheldon as a partner, what it feels like to be raising two girls in this world, and the example she aims to set for her daughters. It was a wonderful conversation that I was fortunate to have. Digging deep into her experience really aided the way the final film came together, and I truly aimed to reflect her words visually throughout it.

I think I can now say that this style of session is my favourite. I love the opportunity to sit down and get real with another Mother. All of us are going through this profound life experience with so many highs and lows, and it's important for us to share our experiences and support each other. It also feels so satisfying to know that I can provide another Mom with an honest memory of the phase they are currently in with their family, so they can reflect on it as their children grow old—because let's be honest, a lot of it will certainly feel like a blur! It's important to remember it as it truly was.

If you, or someone you know, has an interest in participating in this style of session, I would love to hear from you. You can find out more information about how this particular session works here. You can also view the final film and complete collection of photos from this session below.

Or perhaps you'd like to see what else might float your boat—you can see information all of different packages I offer here.

That's it, that's all, and a very Happy International Women's Day to you!! xx
